The Shins, who haven’t released an album since 2012’s Port of Morrow, have completed work on a new album according to frontman James Mercer. Earlier this year they teased new music on Instagram with the hashtags “#tokeemifyougotem,” “#auralapothecary,” and “#lordelizabeth.”
In a new interview with Portland radio station KBOO 90.7, Mercer said the new album is coming “early next year,” most likely January. (Around the 21:19 mark in the linked clip.)
He's also as excited as anyone for the news. At the 55 minute mark he says:
“I’m really excited about this record... I think we’ve got something that Shins fans will really love, and I think there’s some other things on there that are different enough. I made a concerted effort on certain songs to fit the palette, to use the palette that I’ve used historically for the band... I think it’s really strong. I think lyrically, I’m better than I ever was. And I think my songwriting is stronger than it ever was.”
Recently, The Shins shared a cover of the Rubber Soul Beatles classic “The Word” for Netflix’s new children’s show, Beat Bugs.
