At last, Lorde has released Melodrama, her excellent new album. Hot take: this one should be held up alongside masterworks of modern pop like Lemonade (2016), Emotion (2015), Art Angels (2015), 1989 (2014).
Fleet Foxes’ excellent and uncompromising new album, Crack-Up, is out today. Maybe you’ve heard “Third of May” or “If You Need to, Keep Time on Me”. The rest is worth your time, and lots of it — from our review: “Of all the records you listen to this year, this might be the one that is the most tempting to dismiss on a first, second or third listen, but Crack-Up rewards those who wait for it to dissolve slowly.”
Young Thug put out his long-awaited “singing album”, Beautiful Thugger Girls last night. Hot take: as the followup to Thugger’s pop and creative breakthrough, Jeffery, there’s a fair amount of pressure on BTG to be good. And, holy shit, is it good. Country trap? I’m so happy.
Ride are back with their first long player in 20 years, Weather Diaries. Hot take: unfortunately, this return isn’t as lustrous as the return of their shoegaze/dream-pop contemporaries Slowdive, but still, new Ride!
Big Boi has released Boomiverse, his first solo album since 2012’s underwhelming Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. Hot take: anyone hoping Big Boi would return to the stanky extravagance of Sir Lucious Left Foot will leave disappointed. That’s not to say there aren’t some bangers here. While it’s no “Shine Blockas”, choice cut goes to “Kill Jill” featuring Killer Mike and Jeezy.
2 Chainz has released his new album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music. Drake, Nicki Minaj, Migos, Pharrell, Gucci Mane, and one half of RaeSremmurd show up for the affair. Hot take: the best 2 Chainz collection by a substantial margin.
Students of The Smiths, indie poppers The Drums have released their “Abysmal Thoughts”, their first LP since 2014’s Encyclopedia. Hot take: it’s their best album so far and singles “Abysmal Thoughts” and “Blood Under My Belt” are two of their best songs.
