Phil Elverum's music as Mount Eerie never made much sense to me until I moved to the Pacific Northwest. Now it sounds like dispatches from the forest and thus makes perfect sense. If you don't live here you should listen to Elverum's new record Sauna with your eyes closed, thinking about a lot of dense green. It's raining, but very softly, and sideways, in a fine mist. You can see a little mountain beneath the clouds and the long rising slope of the volcano to the south. You're accompanied by Elverum's Greek chorus of women's voices; he's sitting by the fire somewhere. Fighter jets pass overhead. "Nothing is familiar." Listen via NPR while you wait to pick up a physical copy starting February 3rd.
