I've been hearing Parquet Courts play songs from their new record Sunbathing Animal since March 2013, so finally having the full record up for stream a week in advance of its physical release date feels like the culmination of a long saga in my life characterized by my disappearing down multiple "She's Rolling" YouTube k-holes (other songs too, but mostly that one). What with the band's extensive road-testing of the whole thing and a killer lead-in of diverse singles, we knew this record was gonna be good, and lo, it's really, really, really good - co-frontman Andrew Savage continues to prove he can pack the smart, cutting lyrical content most bands can barely squeeze across their whole career into one song (that'd be "Duckin' and Dodgin'"), while the rest of the guys provide a squalling, kraut-y rhythmic interplay of shambling guitar solos and driving drums that'll make you want to either dance violently or get in your car and intimidate strangers at stoplights. We suggest both, but not at the same time. Stream Sunbathing Animal below, pick it up in a record store starting June 3rd, or revisit the title track's video below (it stars Savage's cat).
One of our most anticipated records of 2014 more than lives up to our expectations.
