I remember the first time I heard Soulwax's remix of The Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What Yo Want." It was during a particularly fuzzy DJ set at SXSW 2008, and I distinctly remember the palpable excited energy in the room when people realized just who's voice it was that these intensifying synth planes and percolating arpeggios were twisting and swirling around. I'm sure that same energy can be felt on the Belgian duo's latest official remix.
We get a full minute and three seconds of Soulwax's standard––and very effective––bouncy disco before Arcade Fire's Régine Chassagne's distinct vocals coo "They heard me singing and they told me to stop." That dynamic-shift just floors me––it's so brilliantly executed. Soulwax's "Sprawl II" only builds and swells from there, becoming a fully realized, utterly fantastic tribute to one of the best songs from one of the best bands working today.
