On midnight on Friday, Chance the Rapper released his long-awaited album, Surf. That makes it the third album to be surprise-released this week, after ASAP Rocky’s At. Long. Last. ASAP. and Christopher Owens’ Chrissybaby Forever.
Fans are quick to note that this album is not a solo release from Chance, who last went solo on his breakthrough mixtape, 2013’s Acid Rap. The album was recorded alongside his band the Social Experiment and shines a particular light on the SoX bandleader, trumpeter Nico “Donnie Trumpet” Segal.
Surf spans 16 tracks and features guest appearances from Janelle Monáe, Erykah Badu, Busta Rhymes, Big Sean, Jeremih, J. Cole, Raury, B.o.B., and several others. Chance’s “proper” follow-up to Acid Rap is still forthcoming. Reported contributors to that album include Frank Ocean, André 3000 and James Blake.
