Egyptian Hip Hop

Egyptian Hip Hop is kind of a misleading name for this quartet: for one, they’re from the UK postpunk mecca of Manchester, and their music follows along more in the tradition of some of their town’s most illustrious acts than toward typically mainstream hip-hop fodder – they borrow deep grooves and persistent bass tones from postpunk pioneers like New Order and Joy Division, but layer clubby, distorted synths and dreamy, nu-R&B vocals on top. They’ve been relatively quiet since the release of a 2010 EP, but here’s a new single called “SYH,” and it’s gloomy, sexy, and endlessly relistenable. Check it out while you wait for their debut record, Good Don’t Sleep, to drop October 22.
