Check Out: PASTEL, "Sweeter Conversations"

Though the saxophone may be back in vogue in pop circles, it has lost none of its luster as the passionate complement to a dusky slow-burner. Case in point: “Sweeter Conversations” by experimental R&B upstart PASTEL (real name Gabriel Brenner). The Southern California crooner pines for someone he can never have over a hazy, skittering rhythm, simultaneously warm and spacious. The vehicle for this realization, Brenner’s vocals, drift dreamily through ethereal synth notes, light as a feather, occasionally alighting and pairing with the slow, languorous licks of the saxophone. The result: silky and restrained, makes his loneliness, and the mystery behind it, all the more alluring. Give it a spin below.
