TOPS hail from the same Montreal bedroom scene as Grimes and Doldrums (in fact, you can spot TOPS frontwoman Jane Penny in Grimes' "Vanessa" video), and though their music tends to be a little less over-the-top maximalist and a little more guitar-based, it's also just as compelling and promising. They're gearing up to release a new record, Picture You Staring, to follow up their great 2012 album Tender Opposites, and here's our first taste, "Way to Be Loved," in which TOPS show off their taste for syncopated rhythms and a deliberate funk groove. And Penny's vocals, as always, are on point. Check out the song below while you wait for the rest of Picture You Staring, out via Arbutus September 2nd.
