Thanks to the wide-reaching appeal of his latest record Take Care, the Canadian rapper Drake has been on everyone’s mind for the past few weeks, and you can count British songstress Florence Welch as one of the many with no immunity to his emotive hip-hop charms.
Flo brought her Machine to BBC’s Radio 1 earlier this week to perform some originals from their latest record Ceremonials, as well as a rendition of the Gil Scott Heron-indebted, Rihanna-featuring, Jamie xx-produced title track from Drake’s new album.
Because it’s Florence, her band amp up the atmospheric guitar and strings to eleven and slip the whole thing down into a decidedly minor key, allowing Flo plenty of spotlight to wail her signature wail and even provide a more-than-passable imitation of Drake’s rapped verses. The final product is fabulously mesmerizing, effortlessly transplanting the clubby groove of the original into a dark, chamber-pop anthem. Check it out.
