LISTEN: Future Islands - "In The Inkwell"

Baltimore synth-poppers Future Islands bring their captivating, impossible-to-define sound back on an upcoming 7” to be split with Lonnie Walker. Their contribution is haunting, driving “In the Inkwell.” Melodramatic vocals (bringing to mind any number of British postpunk frontmen) and synths that sound tailor-made for Christmas music twine around sexy bass and driving drumbeats. Perhaps the best thing about “In the Inkwell” is how flawlessly the band create an atmosphere – no moments seem empty or lacking in depth, and at the same time the track doesn’t seem too packed with unnecessary accouterments. “You can’t make someone love you,” is the stricken refrain, but Future Islands can at least make whatever heartbreaker a really good song.
