John Legend & The Roots – “Wake Up” (Arcade Fire Cover) (Studio Version)

It's no secret that the Roots and John Legend admire Arcade Fire's socially conscious lyricism and humanitarianism. Their first collaborative effort, a covers album dedicated to politically charged songs, was named after the Montreal ensemble's breathtaking “Wake Up.” Though their cover of the track was the first they recorded together, it did not make the final cut of the album, and only a live, video was available, until now. The studio version sounds identical to their live performance, beginning with a brassier brand of rock music that shapes Legend's soaring vocals, and concluding with a light-hearted and soulful, funkier rendition of the song's closing sequence.
