Diplo and Major Lazer’s brand of moombahton-flavored dancehall has seen massive success over the last couple years, pulling off two Billboard Top 5, multi-platinum hits with “Lean On” (featuring DJ Snake and MØ) and “Cold Water” (with Justin Bieber and, once again, MØ). The group—consisting of the famous Diplo, Trinidadian DJ Jillionaire, and Jamaican-American DJ Walshy Fire—seems to be looking to complete their hat-trick with their newest single.
“Run Up”, getting in early on this unseasonably warm January, features reliable hitmakers Nicki Minaj and PartyNextDoor over breezy metallic clanks and a looped vocal sample made to sound like a bird of paradise. It isn’t really hard to imagine this song pouring out of Bluetooth speakers for the next four to six months. Which is to say, of course, it’s a new Major Lazer single. In an interview with Zane Lowe, Diplo called the song the “perfect party record”, which, scientifically, is most likely accurate.
Major Lazer’s last album was Peace is the Mission (2015).
