Several weeks ago, Canadian rockers Metric announced their fifth album, Synthetica, but didn't offer any audio to sample. Now with the album's June 12th release date less than six weeks away, the band have debuted the first single, "Youth Without Youth."
While not as immediate has "Help I'm Alive," Metric didn't sacrifice storytelling (according to the band, the song is about the decaying social state seen through eyes of a "depraved" child) for catchy hooks. Quite the contrary, they injected mood-setting, crunchy guitar riffs and a rollicking bass line to aid Emily Haines angsty vocals, which––don't hate us––remind us of Kurt Cobain. The end product is no "Smells Like Teen Spirit," but it's sure as hell a great way to introduce a record.
