We enjoyed Nao’s noteworthy debut album, For All We Know, though much of the album falls short of “Trophy”, the album crowning jewel and final pre-release single. “Trophy”, like “So Good” before it, has a feeling of inevitability to it—who else in this wave of funky R&B chanteuses could link up with A. K. Paul, immensely talented brother of Jai? “Trophy” is far too natural and spontaneous for FKA Twigs. Aluna Francis probably won’t ever be this nimble. Banks has the chops but is too attached to formalism. Nao and Paul are natural collaborators, that much has been evident since 2014. “Trophy” builds on their easy chemistry.
