A Christmas gift from Lana Del Rey may mean another Youtube video of her embracing the heavily tattooed male model who’s figured heavily in the promotional campaign for her upcoming record Born to Die, but it also means we're introduced to a different side of the singer.
“Yayo”'s simple, fingerpicked guitar and swelling background strings allow plenty of room for Lana to show off her voice in a way I didn’t really think she was capable of before. “You have to take me right now from this dark trailer park,” she sings, begging a bad-boy beau to whisk her away to Vegas, desperate to the point where it’s almost creepy. This is the closest we’ve heard Ms. Del Rey to the “gangster Nancy Sinatra” she’s been presented to us as – the lounge singer in the Black Lodge, sultry and seedy and almost scary all at once. This is a fantastic song. Listen.
