School of Seven Bells’ upcoming third LP Ghostory will be their first recorded without singer and founding member Claudia Deheza, but based on the tracks we’ve heard so far, Benjamin Curtis and Alejandra Deheza are continuing on with their chilly, dreamy jams just fine in her absence. First single “Lafaye” (it follows up the band’s initial leak, the record’s first track “The Night”) sets up Ghostory’s loose but defining concept – the story of the titular Lafaye and the ghosts of her life.
It’s appropriately gauzy and haunting, all layers of reverb-drenched vocals and guitar set above a rumbling, almost clubby heartbeat. We’re of the school that believes SVIIB at their best when they lean toward dancy electropop, and they’re absolutely at their best here. The full record will drop on Vagrant on February 28.
