Kendrick Lamar is expected to release his highly anticipated follow-up LP to 2012's masterpiece good kid, m.A.A.d city before the year's end. Or at least he was. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Kendrick noted he doesn't yet have a release date in mind for his new record, adding that he was “not sure at all” that it would come out this year at all. Sad news, indeed, but it didn't stop him from releasing the album's lead single, "i".
It's an extremely sunny cut, featuring a happy-making sample of the Isley Brothers' 1973 single "The Lady". The playful tune feels unexpected from a rapper best known for the emotional and aggressive overtones in his music. Our theory is that Flying Lotus really rubbed off on him – just listen to that glorious jazzy coda. It could easily be a sequel to his recent single with FlyLo, "Never Catch Me".
