Sam Smith stopped by BBC Radio 1 for a chat with Annie Mac about the upcoming re-release of his blockbuster debut, In the Lonely Hour. On the new release, he covers Amy Winehouse’s “Love is a Losing Game”, a stunner from the late artist’s masterpiece Back to Black.
In an interview with Mac, Sam Smith speaks on the influence Amy Winehouse had in his artistry, and how watching the recent Winehouse documentary, Amy, took him back to his formative years as an artist:
“I saw the film recently and, sometimes, people forget my age. I was 11 years old when Frank came out […] and that album has really shaped me as an artist and my views on music and my relationship with music, lyrically. Seeing that film brought me back to that moment of being 11 years old — her rawness on such beautiful chords, on such expensive chords.”
