Remember that mysterious white LPThom Yorke was showing off on Twitter a few days ago? Turns out David was right, it was a follow-up to Yorke's 2006 solo LP, The Eraser, and it's been surprise-released (a.k.a. Beyoncé'd) via BitTorrent. The new 8-track effort is called Tomorrow's Modern Boxes and can be downloaded for a cool $6. The infamous 180g white vinyl option is also available.
The Radiohead frontman has long been known as an innovator in the field of music distribution, and he's been a loud and mostly clear-headed critic of existing (and sometimes archaic) models of distribution. Releasing Modern Boxes through BitTorrent is but another experiment for him.
“It’s an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around. [...] If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work. Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves. Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers. If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.”
Check out the LP's opening track “A Brain In A Bottle,” and it's video below. They're available for free download here.
