Ariana Grande is ready to follow-up her 2014 LP, My Everything, with Moonlight, early next year. The lead single landed today, armed with “Crazy in Love” drums, some “Break Free” phasers, and a repeated spoken hook that, as Michelle Geslani pointed out, sounds like Mystikal’s “Shake Ya Ass” (and, indeed, Ari’s own “Problem”).
Despite these promising ingredients, “Focus” isn’t as immediate has Grande’s great pair of singles leading to My Everything. But like most pop aimed at the radio, “Focus” benefits greatly from Stockholm Syndrome. The single’s colorful and stylish video, directed by an on-point Hannah Lux Davis, also helps.
