For some exciting reason, it’s Pink Floyd week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, the indiest of late night shows. Brooklyn psychedelic popsters MGMT took advantage of the occasion to bring to Fallon’s stage epic fog machine, a plethora of bubbles, a possibly Life Aquatic-inspired yellow jumpsuit and beanie hat dress code, Bradford Cox of Atlas Sound and Deerhunter (in full Joey Ramone regalia) on tapes, and Floyd’s “Lucifer Sam.”
If that sounds like a lot to you, you’re right – the whole thing is sensory overload – but there was truly no better group of musicians to cover Floyd’s best song about an evil ship’s cat. MGMT’s guitar onslaught makes that riff echo into creepy infinity like the Twin Peaks theme song, and the electronic dueling from Cox and MGMT’s Ben Goldwasser put the song nicely on modern footing. Enjoy.
