Savages - Shut Up

I don't know if I've ever anticipated a recording of a song more than Savages' "Shut Up," and here it is, accompanied by a stunning live-footage video by the director Giorgio Testi and a chilly spoken word introduction by charmingly-accented frontwoman Jehnny Beth.

Allow me to wax rhapsodical for a second - in a world that's always finding new ways to silence women's voices, for a band of four women to write a song this stunningly angry, with Jehnny yelling "If you tell me to shut up, I'll shut it down" over a delirious motorik groove and shattering guitar from Gemma Thompson, is something really, really special. It gives the name of the band's upcoming record, Silence Yourself, another challenging edge - don't tell her to shut up, you shut up, and listen. It's out May 7.
