The National tease new album

The National have picked up on 2017’s hottest trend: the oh-so “mysterious“ album teaser clip. So far this year we’ve seen everyone from The War on Drugs to Haim to Dirty Projectors to Grizzly Bear (a mind-numbing 14 times, these guys!) take social media promotion to murkier places. The National may have them beat with their grainy, vaguely dystopian faux news report clip with creepy phrases like “Sleep Well Beast” and “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness.” Watch it below.

Last year National frontman Matt Berninger spoke on the album in a podcast where he explained that “iIt’s about marriage, and it’s about marriages falling apart.” Berninger and his wife wrote the album’s lyrics together about their own experiences. “It’s saving my marriage,” he said, before backtracking a bit by reassuring that his marriage is healthy.

On Inauguration Day, the band premiered a new song called “Turtleneck” at a Planned Parenthood benefit concert. Looks like even more new music is imminent.
