Up front: The xx stopped by BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge for a performance session and amid renditions of “Angels” from their sophomore slump Coexist and “Dangerous” from their great third LP, I See You, they dropped a cover of JT’s essential mid-aughts masterpiece “My Love”. Hot damn.
It makes sense that the xx would be inspired by Justin Timberlake’s landmark 2006 album FutureSex/LoveSounds, especially its radiant cynosure, “My Love”. Years before the UK trio took the stark minimalism and sentimentality of Kanye’s 808s & Heartbreak and distilled it into a well of atmospheric electronica and moody r&b that Drake, Rihanna, and countless others could draw from, Justin Timberlake had a radical proof of concept in “My Love”. It was a visionary take on a trance song, casting Justin Timberlake as a Gloria Gaynor-like diva, synths as sunbeams, drums as running brooks, and T.I. as, well, T.I. And now we’ve come full circle. (Though I See You’s “Dangerous” already came damn close.)
