Baltimore songwriter, producer, and rapper Blaqstarr takes a cue from his friend / mentor M.I.A. on “Ryda Girl,” first single from his early-2011 debut release The Divine EP. Known for his work with the Sri Lankan rapper, as well as Rye Rye and Diplo, Blaqstarr’s solo work is a fascinating amalgamation of many disparate influences -– and that’s reflected in the song’s video, a kind of Clockwork Orange psychic driving montage of heavily edited images whose choppiness mirrors that of the song’s pitch-shifted vocals and scattered beat. It’s a fascinating hip-hop song in that it works well with the schizophrenic all-over-the-place energy that’s trendy in indie pop right now. Check it out.
