For Nokia’s new project Inside Track, Boston synth poppers Passion Pit busted out a rare acoustic set this September in LA. Check out “Moth’s Wings” –- stripped of all the effects that appear on the band’s 2009 debut “Manners,” it sounds as intimate and fragile as its title. This version could be a different song entirely – acoustic guitars interplay tenderly, and frontman Michael Angelakos’ voice sounds fittingly unstrained. The truth is, I don’t know how to feel about an acoustic version of a song (a band?) whose greatest strengths lie in its electric elements. It is admirable that Passion Pit have the technical skill to make a song so grounded in synth and keyboard successful using only acoustic guitars, but I’d prefer the soaring complexity of the original version over this Dave Matthews-d up acoustic rendition any day. Give it a listen and see what you think.
